Henry could be James Gibson SWISHER’s<\/p>\nfather (which would probably be the reason Gibson is his middle name –<\/p>\nfor his mother).<\/P><\/p>\n<\/UL><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<HR WIDTH=\"100%\"><\/P><\/p>\n<A NAME=\"SWISHER, James Gibson\"><\/A>SWISHER, James Gibson<\/B><\/P><\/p>\n<UL><\/p>\nJames Gibson SWISHER was born in 1794 in Tennessee. His wife is unknown<\/p>\nat this time, but it is known that he had a son named <A HREF=\"#SWISHER, John Milton\">John<\/p>\nMilton SWISHER<\/A>, born 1819 in Tennessee. James had served in the War<\/p>\nof 1812, the Tennessee Militia and the United States Mounted Rangers. He<\/p>\ncame to Texas in 1833 settled for a few months in Milam County, and then<\/p>\nmoved on to Washington County. James was Captain of a company of volunteers<\/p>\nand fought for Texas independence. He was one of four men who, on Dec.<\/p>\n11, 1835, met to arrange the terms of the Mexican surrender and also one<\/p>\nof four delegates from Washington Municipality to the Convention of 1836<\/p>\nat Washington-on-the-Brazos. There he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\nBecause of his accomplishments, Swisher County, Texas was named for him.<\/p>\nThere are several memorials throughout the county, including one outside<\/p>\nthe courthouse and a photograph at the Swisher County Museum. The photograph<\/p>\nat the museum, however, is said to NOT be James Gibson SWISHER. It is speculated<\/p>\nthat it might be John Milton, and I will post as soon as I find out. James<\/p>\nand his family moved to Austin when it was named Texas state capitol and<\/p>\nlived there until he died in 1864.<\/P><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<HR WIDTH=\"100%\"><\/P><\/p>\n<A NAME=\"SWISHER, John Milton\"><\/A>SWISHER, John Milton<\/B><\/P><\/p>\n<UL><\/p>\nJohn Milton SWISHER was born in 1819 in Tennessee to <A HREF=\"#SWISHER, James Gibson\">James<\/p>\nGibson SWISHER<\/A>. His wife is unknown at this time. John joined Houston’s<\/p>\narmy and fought in the Battle of San Jacinto. He served as Assistant Secretary<\/p>\nof the Republic of Texas and was Texas’ first auditor. John died in Austin,<\/p>\nTexas in 1891. <\/P><\/p>\n<\/UL><\/p>\n<\/UL><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<HR WIDTH=\"100%\"><\/P><\/p>\n<A NAME=\"SWISHER, Mary\"><\/A>SWISHER, Mary<\/B><\/P><\/p>\n<UL><\/p>\nMary SWISHER married someone with the last name SAYLOR.
